1979 Gold Wagon Train

1979 Georgia Gold Wagon Train

On Nov. 23, 1979, 75 covered wagons and hundreds of

riders pulled out of Dahlonega for a 3-day journey to

Atlanta, where they would present Georgia gold to be

used in regilding the weathered state capitol dome.

The 1979 wagon train followed the same route used by

a similar wagon train from Dahlonega in 1958, which

brought the gold for the original gilding of the state

capitol dome in 1959.

By the mid-1970s, much of the gold leaf was missing from

the dome, leading to the "Make Georgia a Shining Example"

project to raise money to regild the capitol dome
