1979 Gold Wagon Train

1979 Georgia Gold Wagon Train

Mid-morning of Nov. 26, 1979, the wagon train rolled into

downtown Atlanta with its cargo of gold protected by a

mounted escort from the Fulton County Sheriff's Dept.

Members of the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Jaycees

had placed the gold dust and nuggests in a cloth

bag, which was placed in a historic leather chest.

At noon, everyone gathered on the steps of the eastern

entrance to the state capitol for the ceremonies in

which the gold was presented to Gov. George Busbee.
