STATE GOVERNMENT -- PEANUT DESIGNATED AS OFFICIAL GEORGIA STATE CROP.

Code Section 50-3-70 Enacted.

AN ACT

To amend Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to other state symbols, so as to designate the peanut as the official state crop; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, for several decades, Georgia has been responsible for producing nearly 50 percent of the total United States peanut crop; and

WHEREAS, the peach growers of this state have earned a well-deserved reputation for consistently producing peaches of the highest quality; and

WHEREAS, over 50 percent of the peanuts used in the production of peanut butter comes from the State of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Georgia leads the nation in peanut exports, supplying nearly 60 percent of the United States export markets and contributing over $150 million to our nation's balance of trade.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:

SECTION 1.

Article 3 of Chapter 3 of Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to other state symbols, is amended by adding a new Code section at the end thereof, to be designated Code Section 50-3-70, to read as follows:

"50-3-70.

The peanut is designated as the official Georgia state crop."

SECTION 2.

All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.

[Note: Because three separate bills were enacted at the 1995 session adding Code sec. 50-3-70, the General Assembly subsequently redesignated the Code section in this act as sec. 50-3-72.]
