Allen D. Candler

Allen D. Candler was born in Lumpkin County, Georgia in 1834. He served Georgia in the Civil War, then held several different political posts, before becoming Georgia Secretary of State in 1894. In 1898 Candler was elected governor; he served two consecutive terms. But he may be best remembered for what he did after his terms of office, when he edited numerous volumes of Georgia's early historical records - records still used heavily by historians today. Candler died in 1910; Candler County was named in his honor in 1914.
