Charles Jenkins 1805 -1883 Career: one of the authors of the "Georgia Platform" endorsing the Compromise of 1850; unsuccessful vice presidential candidate; served on the Georgia Supreme Court and later as governor of Georgia. Jenkins County created and named in his honor in 1905 (an act the following year correctly described the boundary between Jenkins and two adjacent counties).
