Clement Anselm Evans

1833-1911

Career: Served as judge and Georgia state senator; rose to rank of brigadier general in the Confederate Army, participating in most of the major battles from the Peninsula campaign through Appomattox; became a Methodist minister after the war; published a Military History of Georgia and edited a 12 volume Confederate Military History (authoring two volumes himself); helped found the United Confederate Veterans; also edited (with Allen D. Candler) the four volume Cyclopedia of Georgia. Evans County created and named in his honor in 1914.
