Flooding of Baker County Courthouse

1994 Flooding of the Baker County Courthouse

In 1994, rain from Tropical Storm Alberto produced flood conditions in southwest Georgia so severe that climatologists estimated that rainfall of this magnitude would happen only once in every 500 years. As shown above, water from the Flint River almost reached the second story of the Baker County courthouse, which had been built in 1900. As a result, Baker County officials decided to find a new home for county government. In 1994, a vacant school building in Newton was designated temporary courthouse. The 1900 courthouse was subsequently repaired and became the home of several public service agencies.
