Baldwin County Courthouse

Old Baldwin County Courthouse

Location: Milledgeville

Date Built: 1887

Architectural Style: Neoclassical Revival with Victorian clock tower

Designer: McDonald Bros. and P.E. Dennis

Other Information:

Baldwin County's previous courthouse had burned in 1861, but the outbreak of the Civil War kept the county from building a replacement. After the war, both chambers of the state capitol, the Masonic Hall, and a local opera house were used for court sessions. In 1883, the legislature authorized Baldwin County to borrow up to $25,000 to build four fireproof county offices, as well as a courthouse, on the site of the former courthouse. In 1885, work began on the new courthouse, which was completed in 1887 (see photo). This courthouse was remodeled in 1937 and 1965. Construction of a new courthouse began in 1995 and was completed in 1997. Subsequently, the old courthouse was sold to Georgia College & State University, which plans to renovate the historic structure.
