First Fulton County Courthouse

Second Fulton County Courthouse

Location: Atlanta

Date Built: 1881-82

Architectural Style:

Designer: Parkins & Bruce

Other Information: After the General Assembly accepted Atlanta's offer to tear down the old city hall/county courthouse so that a new state capitol could be built on the site, Fulton County officials began planning for a new county courthouse. In 1879, the legislature authorized the county to levy a special tax to fund a new courthouse. Construction of the new courthouse began in 1881 and was completed the next year at a cost of $100,000 (see postcard 1 and postcard 2). The building was located at the corner of Hunter St. (now MLK Jr. Ave.) and Pryor St., which is the location of the current courthouse.
