1838 Muscogee County Courthouse
1838 Muscogee County Courthouse

Muscogee County's second courthouse was this three-story brick structure built in 1838 by John and Will Godwin. Apparently, the courthouse was used by both county and city governments, for the city paid one-third and the county two-thirds of the cost of construction. The courthouse (see photo) was located on a city block today the block bounded by Ninth and Tenth streets and First and Second avenues. During the Civil War, the courthouse was used as a Confederate hospital. After the war, the courthouse was again used by the county until torn down and replaced by an even larger courthouse in 1896 on the same site.
