Daniel Appling

Daniel Appling was born in Columbia County, Georgia in 1787, and became a hero in the War of 1812 when his detachment of riflemen surprised and captured a larger British garrison along Sandy Creek in New York on May 19, 1814, allowing a valuable shipload of weapons and naval stores to be delivered to Sackett's Harbor in New York. Appling County, Georgia, created by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on Dec. 15, 1818, was named in honor of Daniel Appling.
