Discobolus Sheet

Discobolus Sheet

The U.S. Postal Service issued the 1996 Discobolus stamp in sheets of 20 stamps. In the left selvage (margin) of the sheet is a photograph of the marble statue, along with the caption:

Centennial Olympic Games

The ancient Greek Olympic Games were held ever four

years from at least 776 BC until 393 AD. Inspired by the

original Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France

proposed a modern version in 1892. The first Games were

staged in 1896. The 1996 Centennial

Games will be hosted by Atlanta.

Also in the selvage at the bottom is the notation next to the statue:

bronze original of c. 450 BC

Romano delle Terme, Rome, Italy
