Francis S. Bartow

Francis S. Bartow was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1816. He served in both the Georgia House and Senate, and originally a Union supporter until the election of Lincoln as President, after which Bartow became an ardent seccessionist. He was elected to the Confederate Congress, but chose instead to lead a militia unit to Virginia, where he was killed in the first Battle of Bull Run in 1861. In December of that same year, the former Cass County, Georgia was renamed Bartow County in his honor.
