Georgia Constitution Web Page Introduction
The Constitution of the United States has been described as "the fundamental political agreement among Americans -- an agreement that binds together not only living citizens but also the past and future generations. And a constitutional amendment, by altering that agreement, is the single most solemn political action that one generation can take." The same can be said of the Georgia Constitution insofar as the citizens of this great state are concerned--especially since they are called upon every two years to ratify proposed amendments to this important charter. This web-site has designed and produced with a special eye toward the citizens of Georgia. A vibrant and successful democracy depends upon an informed citizenry, and one of the most important elements of that information is the constitution of the state itself, the document that sets the framework for everything else that happens. Our web site offer you easy access to the text of our state constitution--and we hope to add explanatory commentary to make it even more understandable. Also, prior to each general election, we plan to provide Georgia voters with a simple-to-understand explanation of each proposed constitutional amendment. A second goal of this web site is to provide Georgia jurists, attorneys, legal scholars, and historians a complete and authoritative resource on the Georgia Constitution--both past and present. This is the only single place where full text of every constitution in our state's history--as well as all the amendments--can be found. Additionally, we hope to be able to cross-link similar provisions among the various constitutions for a better understanding of Georgia's constitutional development. Again, we are pleased to offer this web site as a service to the people of Georgia. Please e-mail your comments and suggestions to Mel Hill.
