George Gilmer

1790-1859

Career: fought in the War of 1812 and concurrent Indian campaigns; served in the Georgia and U.S. House of Representatives; governor of Georgia during the Cherokee Indian Removal (Trail of Tears). Gilmer County created and named in his honor in 1832.
