Future Site of Quitman County - 1839

Future Site of Quitman County, 1839

This map shows the western areas of Randolph and Stewart counties from which Quitman County would be created in 1858. The meandering dark red line marks the Chattahoochee River. Located on the river in Randolph County is the town of Tabanana (spelled "Tobchanna" on the map), which actually had been renamed "Georgetown" in 1836. This town would later become county seat of Quitman County.

"Map of Georgia & Alabama exhibiting the post offices, post roads, canals, rail roads & c. By David H. Burr. (Late topographer to the Post Office.) Geographer to the House of Representatives of the U.S."

From his The American Atlas (London, J. Arrowsmith, 1839).
