John Dooly

Little is known about Colonel John Dooly, except that he was an American Revolution Patriot leader, who played a significant role in the Patriot victory at the Battle of Kettle Creek (1779) in Georgia. Dooly was probably born in North Carolina. He was killed by British Tory soldiers the year after the Battle of Kettle Creek, the same soldiers who (at least according to popular legend) then met their fate at the hands of Nancy Hart and her husband. Dooly County was named in honor of Col. John Dooly in 1821.
