Crawford Long Stamp FDC

Crawford Long Stamp First Day Cover

The cachet on the above envelope is typical of several different designs used to prepare first day covers for the Crawford Long stamp. This cover used two of the 2¢ Long stamps because the first-class rate at the time was 3¢ for the first ounce for letters mailed to destinations outside the city. Interestingly, local mail (i.e., letters mailed to an address within the city limits) could be sent for 2¢ for the first ounce. The Jefferson Post Office apparently did not catch or enforce this rate, as the first day cover below with a single 2¢ stamp mailed to Wyoming attests.
