Olympic Baseball Stamp Ceremony

Olympic Baseball Stamp Ceremonies

At ceremonies near home plate in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, Hank Aaron and U.S. Postal Service regional postmaster general Jerry Lee unveiled a large photograph of the new Olympic Baseball stamp on April 3, 1992. Also in attendance were various baseball personalities and officials. Stamp artist Tony DeLuz is shown to the far left.

Shown above (l-r) are former Los Angeles Dodger catcher Steve Yeager, Dodger shortstop Maury Wills, and Braves home run king Hank Aaron examining the scene depicted in the stamp. The three stars took turns analyzing the stamp and trying to decide whether the runner was out or safe. Wills, a famous base stealer, thought clearly the runner was safe. Yeager, noted for his skills as a catcher, had an opposite view. Aaron, when asked to speculate whether the runner sliding into home was safe or out, replied that he had no experience in this type of thing, explaining, "I always walked over home plate." In uncharacteristic fashion, umpire Ron Luciano, who also participated in the ceremony, could not make a call on the close play. Thus, the stamp leaves it up to each person viewing it to decide whether the runner is out or safe.
