Philip Cook

 

Philip Cook was born in Virginia in 1817. After moving to Georgia he studied and practiced law, before serving in the State Senate, then enlisting in the Confederate Army for the Civil War. He eventually attained the rank of brigadier general. After Reconstruction he served five terms as a U.S. Representative, then as Georgia Secretary of State - a post he held at his death in 1894. Cook County was named in his honor in 1918.
