About This Site

This web site could be mistaken for a photo gallery of popular tourist sites in Georgia -- from the state's highest mountain to its Atlantic beaches. Yet, it does not cover such places as Six Flags Over Georgia, battlefields, and museums. That's because the theme of this web site is to show images of Georgia's diverse physical regions and features -- in particular, those that illustrate ecosystems.

What is an ecosystem? An ecosystem is defined as "any area where living things interact with each other and their physical and chemical environment." Since humans, wildlife, and other living organism exist and interact throughout the state, Georgia consists of countless ecosystems.

This web pages concentrates on ecosystems that involve physical features of Georgia -- as well some manmade features, such as dams, urban areas, and highways. It also includes images that help us visualize how humans interact with their environment -- and some of the consequences.

Initially, the web site primarily consists of personal photos I've taken over the past 25 years of traveling across Georgia. Because I have not visited every county, there are omissions. However, I hope to expand the site so that it covers the state by adding photos from future trips, as well as by soliciting photos from various state and federal agencies, colleagues, and others willing to contribute to this forum.

Please honor our willingness to share by not downloading the images used in this site. Some of these photos have been -- or will be -- utilized in Institute publications, and almost all are copyrighted. If you need access to an image for educational or non-commercial informational purposes, feel free to link to any page in the web site. By linking, you give us the one thing we need to justify offering the web site as a free, public service -- a record of number of accesses. For other uses -- or to submit slides, negatives, or prints for consideration -- please contact me.
