National Postal Museum Commemorative Stamps

On July 30, 1993, the U.S. Postal Service released a block of four stamps to mark the grand opening of the Smithsonian Institution's new National Postal Museum, which is located in the lower level of the Washington City Post Office Building in Washington, D.C. First day of issue ceremonies were held on the main floor of the building.

The stamps feature historic items and images from the museum's collection. One stamp features Benjamin Franklin, Liberty Hall in Philadelphia, a printing press, and a colonial post rider. A second stamp highlights a Pony Express rider, a Civil War soldier writing a letter, and a Concord stagecoach from the 1850s. On the third stamp is a JN-4H biplane (the so-called "Jenny"), Charles Lindbergh, a Railway Mail Service train car, and a 1931 Model A Ford mail truck. The fourth stamp portrays a California gold rush miner's letter to a cousin, several historic stamps, a barcode, and a Milledgeville, Ga. cancellation mark.
