Stephen Heard

1740-1815

Career: Revolutionary war leader, particularly in the back country with other Georgia notables Elijah Clark, John Dooly, and Nancy Hart; participated in the Battle of Kettle Creek; served in the colonial Assembly and one term as Georgia governor during the war years; after the war he was active in local politics in Elbert County and was selected as a delegate to the 1795 state constitutional convention. Heard County created and named in his honor in 1830.
