William Crosby Dawson

 

William Crosby Dawson was born in Greene County in 1798. He graduated from the University of Georgia and practiced law, before being elected to the State House of Representatives. He was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served four terms. He unsuccessfully ran for governor of Georgia, then served one full term in the U.S. Senate. He died in 1856; Dawson County was named in his honor the following year.
