William Dodge

William Dodge was born in Connecticut in 1805. He moved to New York, and actively tried to prevent the Civil War; he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1866. After serving in Congress he became involved in central Georgia, where he purchased a lot of land, and helped establish Georgia's timber industry by building lumber mills. He died back in New York in 1883. Dodge County (the area where much of his land had been purchased) was named in his honor in 1870.
