William Gordon Brantley
William Gordon Brantley was born in Pierce County, Georgia in 1860. He graduated from the University of Georgia, began a law practice, then went on to serve in the Georgia House and Senate, before being elected to eight consecutive terms as a U.S. Representative. After retiring from Congress he again practiced law and died in Washington, D.C. in 1934. There is some confusion as to whether Brantley County is named for William or his father Benjamin, but William's long standing service as a politician makes him the most likely honoree.
