William Washington Gordon

1796-1842

Career: served in both the Georgia House of Representatives and Senate; also served a term as mayor of Savannah; most notable contribution to Georgia was as a founder, and first president of, the Central Railroad and Banking Comapny. This corporation eventually built the first railroad connecting the port of Savannah to Georgia's agricultural interior - creating a major boost for Georgia's economy. Gordon County created and named in his honor in 1850.
