English Roots of James Oglethorpe

On December 22, 1696, Eleanor Oglethorpe, wife of Theophilus, gave birth to their tenth child--James Edward Oglethorpe. James was born in London, where the Oglethorpes spent the winter season.

The Oglethorpe family home was in Godalming, about 35 miles southwest of London.

That spring the Oglethorpes carried young Jamie back to Westbrook Manor, their home in Godalming. It is here that Georgia's future founder would spend his boyhood days.

Though the Oglethorpes lived in Godalming, they owned substantial properties in nearby Haslemere.

And, in fact, young James would follow his father and a brother in being elected to Parliament by the voters of Haslemere. It was in Parliament that James later would push for creation of the new colony of Georgia.

In anticipation of the 300th anniversary of Oglethorpe's birth, members of the Friends of Oglethorpe in Godalming and Haslemere began planning in 1995 for an Oglethorpe Tercentenary visit to Georgia in 1996.
