Part 4: Reception at Oglethorpe University

To mark the conclusion of their Atlanta visit, Oglethorpe University president Donald Stanton hosted a reception in honor of the Godalming and Haslemere visitors.

Joining the group were their Atlanta hosts, university faculty, and British Consul-General David Wright (far right in rear).

Godalming mayor Mary Tomlin responded on behalf of the group, while John Oxborough, president of the Godalming chapter of the Friends of Oglethorpe, offered a toast in recognition of the general's 300th birthday.

John also gave president President Stanton a framed artist's rendering of Godalming to join the university's growing number of paintings and other illustrations associated with the life of James Oglethorpe.

In honor of the English delegation, Atlanta resident Bill Mitchell brought to the reception an original copy of the Thomas Burford mezzotint of James Oglethorpe dating to the 1740s (a portion of which is shown here).
