The greatest exhibition in the history of Olympic stamps, coins, and
memorabilia will be held in Atlanta July 19 through August 3. Entitled
"Centennial Collectibles--OLYMPHILEX 96/Stamps, Coins, and Memorabilia," the
show will be held on the 7th floor of the Atlanta Merchandise Mart, which is
located at 240 Peachtree St. in downtown Atlanta. The exhibition is open to
the public from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. daily, and admission is free.
Each element of the show will feature spectacular items, many of which have
not been on public display previously. Among the items of Olympic
memorabilia on display are:
* the leotard worn by Mary Lou Retton
while winning the gold medal at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics;
*
four gold medals of discus thrower Al Oerter, Olympic items from the
collection of General George Patton, who represented the United States at
the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm; and
* the Sevres porcelain
vase presnted to Johnny Weissmuller for his victories at the 1924 Olympic
Games in Paris.
Special exhibits will feature the Amsterdam 1928,
Berline 1936, and Moscow
1980 Olympiads,
collections of torches, posters, participation and winners medals, special
exhibits at National Olympic Committees, media and Atlanta 1996 pins, office
badges, diplomas, etc.
The world's leading Olympic collectors of
stamps, coins, and memorabilia have donated material for this unprecedented
exhibition, an element of the Cultura Olympiad. OLYMPHILEX '96 offers 1100
frames of philatelic competitive exhibits--with FIP Class for FIP-level
awards and Promotional Class for show awards.
Items in all three categories will also be sold by dealers and postal
administrations from 90 countries, which will offer 1996 Centennial Olympic
Games stamps, as well as stamps and covers from previous Games.
