Atlanta Olympic-Theme Machine Cancel
As part an Atlanta promotion campaign, tourism officials adopted a logo that
showed the outstretched wings of a bird superimposed behind "Atlanta," with
the phrase "Come Celebrate Our Dream" beneath. The stylized bird represents
the Phoenix, the mythical bird which rose from the fire--the symbolism being
Atlanta's rise from the ashes after Sherman. A Phoenix rising from flames
is even part of Atlanta's city seal.

Even though the Atlanta promotional logo did not use the Olympic Rings or
make a direct reference to the Olympics, there can be little doubt that the
phrase "Come Celebrate Our Dream" was an obvious reference to the upcoming
Olympics.
At some point in early 1996, the "Atlanta--Come Celebrate Our Dream" logo
was utilized as a new design for the machine cancelers used at Atlanta's
North Metro mail processing center (which uses the designation "North Metro
GA 30159" as shown below). The logo machine cancel is also used at other
Atlanta mail processing centers, with the cancel showing "Atlanta, GA" and
"303"--the first 3 numbers in Atlanta-area zip codes.
