A faculty member at the Institute's International Center, Ms. Marekia-Cleaveland's work has included conducting training for local government officials abroad (Beijing, Xian, Xining, China); facilitating visiting scholars' and practitioners' training at the University and around Georgia; initiating and developing governance initiatives in Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Uganda); and coordinating the University of Georgia African Immigrant/refugee Initiative. She is well published in environmental policy issues, gender, and democratization in Africa; biodiversity; and wildlife management. Her research interests include political participation, property rights, and women's issues in Africa; refugee resettlement issues in the United States; and community wildlife management issues.

In addition to her work supporting the International Center, Ms. Marekia-Cleaveland has consulted for a variety of organizations, including the government of Kenya, the World Bank, the United Nations, and various non-governmental organizations. She has also held lectures and advised students and participants in internationally related initiatives at various departments and units of the University.

In addition to her law degree from the University of Florida, Ms. Marekia-Cleaveland holds degrees in law (LLB, University of London), environmental studies (MA, York University), and environment/biology (BS, Saint Lawrence University). She has worked as an environmental law and studies lecturer in Kenya.
