Publications—from policy research to practical handbooks to classroom materials—are important vehicles for the Vinson Institute to extend its outreach in Georgia and elsewhere. In 2003, the Office of Publications and Communications processed more than 27,000 orders from all 50 states and various foreign countries. A quarterly electronic newsletter, Newsworthy, along with the Institute Web site, continued to update clients and partners on the Institute’s activities.
Public Policy Research Series notes and papers in 2003 examined workforce challenges and opportunities in Georgia government and the midyear budget appropriation process. In its 35th year as a national journal, State and Local Government Review published articles of relevance to both scholars and practitioners on a number of state, local, regional, and intergovernmental topics. The By the Will of the People video, produced for the Commission for the Celebration of 250 Years of Representative Government in Georgia, explores how significant events in both Georgia and U.S. history have shaped the General Assembly into the representative body it is today. The Institute joined with the Society for Georgia Archaeology to reissue the informative and popular book Frontiers in the Soil: The Archaeology of Georgia, along with a teaching component.
