2006 Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards

The winners of the 2006 Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards, announced in September, included a sole county commissioner and mayor from communities experiencing growth as well as a long-term state authority director. In its fourth year, the initiative is a public-private partnership between the Vinson Institute and Georgia Trend magazine. The winners, selected from a pool of nominations submitted by officials and citizens at large, were Paul Burks, executive director, Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (state/regional); Clarence Brown, sole commissioner, Bartow County (county elected); Nancy Jones, administrator, Wayne County (county appointed); Cecil Pruett, mayor, Canton (city elected); and Michael Brown, manager, City of Savannah (city appointed).

Morris W. H. Collins Jr. Distinguished Practitioner Lecture Series

Richard Harwood, president of the nationally recognized Harwood Institute for Public Innovation, provided an insightful presentation on how communities can act for “change and not just charity” when working for the public good. In particular, he outlined some practical strategies that the audience of primarily local government managers could consider. The lecture series is named for Morris W. H. Collins Jr., who was the Vinson Institute’s first director remembered for his significant contributions to the reorganization of Georgia state government and the establishment of many training programs for public officials. The 2006 Collins lecture was presented in cooperation with the Georgia City-County Management Association.
