Institute publications help provide a strong knowledge base for a wide audience of decision makers by disseminating research, educational materials, and other valuable information. In 2006, the Office of Publications and Communications processed more than 21,000 orders from the 50 states and various foreign countries.

New publications included Spending a Lifetime: The Careers of City Managers, Environmental Management Handbook for Georgia Local Government Officials, and a new, extensively revised edition of the Handbook for Georgia Legislators (print and CD). For the first time, Compliance Auditing in Georgia Counties and Municipalities was made available in an online format and a new print format to allow annual updating. A special Web site providing extensive resources and updates was created for teachers using The Georgia Studies Book: Our State and the Nation. A four-color poster featuring Georgia’s barrier islands was produced in conjunction with the program on protection of these valuable resources.

The Institute Web site and quarterly electronic newsletter continued to update clients and partners about the Institute’s activities. In its 38th year as a national journal, State and Local Government Review published timely articles (in both print and electronic formats) relevant to scholars and practitioners on a range of state, local, regional, and intergovernmental topics.
