Mr. Shain has been with the Institute's ITOS division since the summer of 2000. He has worked on a diverse group of GIS projects including hydrography database editing, map design and production, parcel editing, and Georgia Department of Transportation road network and route editing. For two years, Mr. Shain worked for the Cartography Department of ITOS where he was directly involved with the design and production of the final map products delivered in fulfillment of client contracts. He worked closely with the Georgia Power Company on creating maps that aid in the placement of new power lines, and this work later evolved into Georgia Power's PowerTRAC utility.
Currently, Mr. Shain serves as a Computer Services Specialist with the Geographic Information Support Team (GIST) which is an inter-agency initiative that promotes the use of geographic data standards and geographical information systems in support of humanitarian relief operations. His primary responsibilities include aiding in the maintenance and development of the GIST's data repository, documenting and publishing data sets and imagery to the repository, image processing, and data mining. He also works on the maintenance, development, and data integration of the Global Map Database, which is a comprehensive worldwide geographic database that includes such layers as administrative boundaries, transportation networks, settlements, and hydrology networks.
