About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Governments depend on the Institute’s Office of Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS) to develop and implement Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and train governments in how to use it. Through GIS, governments have information more readily available and can improve operations.

GIS technology organizes all kinds of geographically based data, like transportation systems, land parcels, and tax records, into a practical format. The database systems allow users to access the information quickly and easily and compare data trends. They can also produce maps, charts, and graphs along user-specified criteria.

Many GIS systems are Web-based, giving online access to users in many locations. Whether it involves helping officials identify locations most vulnerable to natural disasters or providing technology training for local tax assessors to improve records accuracy, ITOS-created GIS applications serve a diverse set of needs and audiences.
