About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Feature — Management Development Program for Local Government

For more than 25 years, the Institute’s nationally recognized Management Development Program has been helping managers and supervisors in local governments of all sizes to become effective leaders in their organizations.

The three-course series (link to brochure) focuses on the development of personal and group leadership skills relevant to successful local government operations. Experienced instructors use facilitated learning approaches, with active class involvement a key component. In the first course, participants develop a better awareness of their interpersonal skills and how they can be improved. Those skills are put to the test in the second course, when they explore group dynamics and carry out a service-learning project to benefit their community. In the final course, each participant develops, implements, and gives a presentation on a process improvement project with measurable positive impact on his or her local government.

While larger governments may fill programs on their own, opportunities exist for smaller communities to join together and participate their Regional Development Centers.
