About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

The Vinson Institute’s online training courses combine the quality training associated with the Institute with flexibility to meet the needs of busy government employees and elected officials. Offered in cooperation with UGA’s Center for Continuing Education, these courses cover important topics in financial and human resource management specific to state and local government.

“Our online course offerings have grown quickly in popularity since their debut in 2001, attracting not only students from Georgia but nationwide and even internationally,” commented Vinson Institute director of governmental training Jim Stephens.

“Unlike face-to-face classes, which a busy government employee or official may not have time to attend, the Institute's online classes allow students to progress through their chosen courses at their own pace and on their own schedules.”

The financial management online courses fulfill certain requirements for professional certificates—the State Financial Management Certificate Program for state employees and the Local Finance Officer Certification Program for city and county employees.

The online course Human Resources in Local Government fulfills a course requirement for certificates for elected officials. County commissioners can take the class for the Association County Commissioners of Georgia’s (ACCG) County Commissioners Training Program. Mayors and city council members can use the course to fulfill a requirement for the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute.

Those not involved in Georgia state or local governments can take these online courses and receive certificates of completion and continuing education units (CEUs) from UGA.
