Outreach to Croatia
History of Outreach to Croatia
Since 1998, the Vinson Institute's International Center has led UGA's outreach efforts to Croatia by creating partnerships with organizations such as the Association of Cities and Towns, the Pilar Institute, and the University of Zagreb aimed at building Croatia's economic and government capacity.
Led by Dr. Rusty Brooks, the International Center has received more than $160,000 in grants from Higher Education in Development to partner with the University of Zagreb in engineering a sustainable rural development model for rural Croatia. As a result of this partnership, the University of Zagreb instituted into its charter the first specific objective for outreach at any university in Europe. Additionally, the International Center has led both graduate and undergraduate students in service-learning projects in Croatia.
In 2006, Dr. Lawrence V. and Sarah Mae Phillips gifted $500,000 to create the UGA-Croatia Partnership Fund based on what Dr. Phillips characterized as the University's "tremendous interest and emotional involvement in Croatia."
Current Croatia Outreach Initiatives
Today the UGA-Croatia Partnership Fund sustains current outreach efforts to Croatia on a number of fronts.
UGA faculty and administrators have met with counterparts at the University of Zagreb to explore partnerships in the areas of agriculture, education, and pharmacy. UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine participates in a faculty exchange with the University of Zagreb intended to advance clinical training and research collaboration. UGA's Franklin International Scholars Program hosts Croatian scholars in the areas of Linguistics, Germanic Studies, and Slavic Studies. UGA delegations from the School of Public and International Affairs, College of Environmental Design, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and Department of Political Science have visited Croatia to establish training contracts and study abroad programs. UGA's Center for Global Health has a cooperative agreement encouraging internship exchanges with the University of Zagreb.
Croatia Study Abroad
The Croatia Maymester Study Abroad Program incorporates curriculum from the College of Public Health, College of Environment and Design, Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, and the School of International and Public Affairs. Support from the UGA-Croatia Partnership Fund makes the Croatia Maymester Study Abroad Program one of the most affordable study abroad programs offered at UGA.
