The International Center and its partners at Uzhgorod National University are pursuing collaborative research on governance challenges in Ukraine. Faculty from the two institutions are also examining ways to encourage faculty and students in universities to engage in public service activities.
Past Projects
Beginning in June 2001, the International Center conducted training programs for Kiev City Council members and others on issues related to environmental policy and sustainable development.
The International Center managed a successful community partnership program beginning in 1999 between the governments of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, and Kamianets-Podilsky, Ukraine. This community partnership, funded by USAID, was one of 34 such programs. Through the project, the International Center provided training and consultation in strategic planning, tourism development, and economic development. The Athens-Clarke County and Kamianets-Podilsky community partnership flourished for seven years, resulting in the exchange of more than 25 elected officials between the two cities, numerous program developments, and lasting friendships.
The International Center assisted Uzhgorod State University in creating the Institute for Public Administration and Regional Development, which provides training and applied policy research for local and regional governments in Transcarpathia, Ukraine. USAID/IREX called the program “the most successful [Institutional Partners Project] in the training of public administrators.”
The International Center assisted the University of Georgia’s School of Social Work in a research project that focused on the impact of the post-Cold War transition for women in the Ukraine.
