Assistance

Leaders throughout the state can improve operations and plan effectively for the future with the help of practical, customized assistance provided by the Institute. This assistance takes a variety of forms, from helping a county evaluate its service delivery structure or coordinating a state agency's move to implement Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, to facilitating a planning process among local, regional, and state health care units.

Local option sales tax (LOST) negotiation is a high-stakes process, and the University of Georgia's (UGA) Carl Vinson Institute of Government is available to help cities and counties across the state reach agreement. The Vinson Institute team of experienced mediators, local government specialists, and attorneys can offer unparalleled expertise on LOST and guide local governments through negotiations.

Faculty available through the Vinson Institute team are the only mediators in the state who have undergone State Bar Association-approved LOST mediation training. All members of the mediation team have also completed alternative dispute resolution training approved by the Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution.

Costs

Counties and cities involved in mediation share the costs for services. For a fixed rate, the Vinson Institute will provide one or two dedicated team members to mediate negotiations. Mediation includes three in-person sessions and preparatory work. Additional fees may be required if extra sessions are necessary.

Scheduling

The Vinson Institute's LOST mediators will accommodate the scheduling needs of the negotiating governments and work with designated points of contact to arrange times for in-person sessions.

For questions or to reserve LOST mediation services, contact Local Government Program Manager Murray Weed at 706.542.9502 or mweed@uga.edu.
