Newsworthy (Fall 2009) - Pay Plan Overhaul
The merger of three Georgia technical colleges into one during the summer of 2009 resulted in more than restructuring the academic framework. Administrators also had to deal with different pay systems for employees located on seven different campuses in geographically and economically diverse areas of North Georgia.
Chattahoochee Technical College is now the largest of its kind in the state following its merger with North Metro Technical College and Appalachian Technical College.
After a new organizational structure was confirmed, college administrators called on Vinson Institute human resource management specialists to develop one system to serve all non-faculty employees.
"The Vinson Institute came to us highly recommended. We knew that they would bring experience and, as an outsider, an unbiased perspective," said Randy Reece, Chattahoochee's executive director of human resources.
Institute specialists conducted personal interviews with approximately 70 percent of the college’s employees, according to Carl McCoy, Institute faculty member. Along with questionnaires and salary surveys of the other two-year and technical colleges in the state, the Institute team was able to create snapshots of a wide range of employee positions from which individual descriptions could be written and compensation figures developed.
Chattahoochee Tech administrators will receive three different plan options, McCoy reports. Once a decision is made, the Institute will be available to provide guidance on implementing the plan.
