Preparing tomorrow’s leaders today is a key goal of the EXCEL leadership development program, which has been carried out in partnership between the Vinson Institute and the Georgia Department of Labor (DOL) since 1992. The latest EXCEL class graduated on June 25, 2010, with a special presentation at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia.

EXCEL stands for “Executive Commitment to Excellence in Leadership,” according to Ashley Howard, DOL director of training. “Leadership development at all levels is critical to effective succession planning. The EXCEL program puts that belief into action by equipping DOL leaders and supervisors with the knowledge and skills they need to effectively step into management positions.”

Each class size averages around 30, with participants meeting four times a year for three days at convenient locations around the state, explained David Key, Sr., Vinson Institute adjunct faculty member and EXCEL program facilitator. Topics covered include understanding personal leadership styles, building coalitions in the workplace, developing effective leadership traits, and navigating career growth. Participants must also complete a personal leadership project dealing with a real issue within their organization.
