INTRODUCING NEWSWORTHY: We are pleased to present the first issue of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s new electronic newsletter, Newsworthy. The newsletter is intended to provide you with a view of the current public service and outreach activities of the Institute, along with special initiatives and partnerships. A DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY: The Institute is recognizing 75 years of helping improve government and communities in Georgia with a series of special activities, including a distinguished practitioner lecture by former governor of Mississippi William Winter. Link

OUTSTANDING OUTREACH: Awards honoring distinguished public service are among the faculty highlights for early 2002. Link

TAKING THE PUBLIC PULSE: The Peach State Poll is a new quarterly public opinion survey of Georgians on current public policy issues intended to provide valuable information to decision makers as they deal with issues confronting the state. BALANCING URBAN GROWTH, FOSTERING RURAL DEVELOPMENT: The Southern Study on Persistent Poverty commissioned by U.S. Sen. Zell Miller is one of several special outreach initiatives involving the Institute. Link

WATER WORKS: The Institute is playing an active role in development of a state water management plan through staffing the Joint Comprehensive Water Plan Study Committee. Link

CITY GOVERNMENT 101: More than 400 newly elected officials from cities Albany through Zebulon come to Athens for basic training. Link

NEWS FROM ABROAD: The International Center for Democratic Governance announces its spring lecture series, featuring presentations by visiting faculty and practitioners from Russia and China. Link

GRADS GIVE HIGH MARKS FOR TECH ED: Governmental Services Division faculty have been helping Georgia’s technical college administrators gain a detailed understanding of their students’ post-graduation path. Link

WHAT’S IN A NAME: A comprehensive technical assistance project has linked communities in the US17/A1A Coastal Corridor in a project to identify their heritage tourism potential. Link

BRINGING IT HOME: State and local government education seminars slated for this summer will give educators the tools they need for teaching about citizenship, democratic values, and participation – close to home. Link
