RELIGION IN GOVERNMENT. The latest Peach State Poll reports that Georgians are generally supportive of mixing religion and government, although differences of opinion exist by region and by age.... Another poll tracks Georgians' views on the current economic state of the state. Link
MEDIUM METROS. For the first time, representatives from Georgia's medium-sized metropolitan statistical areas had the opportunity to discuss issues especially relevant to them at the newly established Urban Congress and Summit. Link
CONSUMER AFFAIRS. Surveys conducted by the Institute's Survey Research and Data Services Unit are helping officials from the Governor's Office of Consumer Affairs define their consumer education initiatives for the future. Among the topics surveyed were youth credit card indebtedness, identity theft, and consumer resource concerns of Georgia Hispanics. Link
EXCELLENT WORK. The first Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards, sponsored by the Vinson Institute and Georgia Trend Magazine, honored elected and appointed officials from throughout the state at a special ceremony in Atlanta. Nomination information for the 2004 awards is now online. Link
SUDDEN IMPACT. Institute faculty have completed research to determine the fiscal impacts of an incorporation of Sandy Springs on its citizens and taxpayers, as well as on other parts of unincorporated Sandy Springs and the municipalities of Fulton County. Link
TRAINING TRENDS. Special training sessions are scheduled to help cities prepare for tough economic times and provide state agencies with DocuAnalyzer instruction ....In other news, Richard Milford is named state training manager. Link
CANCELLATION NOTICE. Research from a comprehensive study of Georgia's Service Cancelable Loan (SCL) program is enabling student finance officials to improve their system for allocating and managing program resources to reduce administrative costs and complexity. Link
INTERNATIONAL UPDATE. A delegation of local officials from Shanghai, China recently spent time studying community development projects in Georgia as part of the continuing Sino-American Municipal Training Program. Link
