EXCELLENT SERVICE. Now is the time to nominate local and state officials and professionals for the 2004 Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards, sponsored by the Vinson Institute and Georgia Trend magazine. Details about the award and the nomination process can be found at Link.

TALK SMART GROWTH. Parris Glendening, a nationally recognized leader in helping governments understand and implement smart growth strategies, will be the guest speaker at the third annual Morris W.H. Collins Jr., Distinguished Practitioner lecture on Tuesday, April 13, in Athens. The lecture is free and open to the public. Link

RAISE THE FLAG. Voters recently gave their support to the new state flag design introduced during the 2003 session of the Georgia General Assembly. A poster displaying all of Georgia's state flags is available free of charge. Link

IN ON THE DEBATE. The latest Peach State Poll reports that Georgians are following debate over legislative issues closely, including the proposed same-sex marriage ban. Link

NEW ON THE BLOCK. Hundreds of newly elected city officials gathered in Athens in February and March for specialized training and the chance to network with each other as they begin their roles as public servants. Link

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH. Business, government, education, and community leaders come together for a wide-ranging discussion of the local impacts of globalization; plans are finalized for the new Maymester Study Abroad program to Ukraine.

REVITALIZE AND REGROUP. A major community investment project for South Columbus involves more than 600 participants and results in the development of many creative approaches to revitalize the extensive area. Link

MAPPING THE WAY. While the Legislative Reapportionment Services Office based at the Vinson Institute is well known for its state government work, it also provides a variety of technical assistance activities on the local level. Link

LEADERS WANTED. The Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership is looking for nominees for its next session. In its third year, the program focuses on helping participants from diverse professional backgrounds enhance their environmental leadership skills. Link

CIVIC EDUCATION CPR. Citizenship, participation, and responsibility are key concepts to be addressed during two summer teacher seminars on state and local government cosponsored by the Vinson Institute. Complete information, including online registration, is found at Link.

ON THE JOB TRAINING. With the help of the Vinson Institute, employees of the Macon Water Authority are becoming familiar with a new performance evaluation form that will be used across the board. Link
