GEORGIANS SPEAK UP. Georgians perceive the lottery-funded Pre-K Program as less effective than the HOPE Scholarship for increasing access to education for all Georgians, according to the latest Peach State Poll. Other poll results indicate that views on the economy differ along party lines and that Georgians are wary of their public officials’ willingness to listen. Link

AWARD-WINNING SERVICE. The 2004 Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards were presented September 9 in Atlanta to a select group of local and state officials nominated by their peers. Link

BROWN TO GREEN. A Community and Regional Development Division faculty member is helping local government and community leaders understand new state programs for development of pollution-contaminated land. Link

SMART GROWTH U. The Alliance for Quality Growth is actively involved in providing instruction and building a statewide network focused on Georgia’s future growth management. Link

TRAINING NEWS AND VIEWS. The advanced training program for county officials garners a national award. Also, Vinson Institute faculty provide tips for managing a small city and for selecting a city manager. Link

NEW ROAD MAPS HERE. The Information Technology Outreach Services Division is using the latest GIS technology to create a new official road map for the state. Link

METROS ON THE MOVE. Local government administrators in the Albany MSA recently developed a process to help elected officials and community leaders address the issues and opportunities unique to metropolitan areas. Link

THINK GLOBAL. From Tbilisi, Georgia, to Athens, Georgia, with a stop in Kyrgyzstan, the Institute’s International Center for Democratic Governance provided a wide variety of outreach activities during Summer 2004. Link

IN THE MOVIES. Democracy is the common theme for the award-winning programs and films to be featured during the third annual Public Service: Reel-to-Reel Film Series in October. Link

HOT OFF THE PRESS. Check the online store for new editions and updates for the Suggested Pattern Jury Instructions civil and criminal case volumes and a new fourth edition of the high school textbook An Introduction to Law in Georgia. Link
The new issue of State and Local Government Review includes articles examining how local governments and schools are being impacted by state budget crises and the role of job satisfaction in organizational leadership. Link
A new Web page on the popular GeorgiaInfo Web site is an all-in-one source for information on Georgia counties. Link

Q FACTOR. The Institute hosted a conference of international scholars interested in Q methodology – a tool that can be used to help decisionmakers analyze public views on important policy issues. Link

GET CIVIC. Faculty member Mary Stakes is coordinating a new civic education initiative for the state of Georgia. Link

FACULTY/STAFF SPOTLIGHT. New additions to the Research and Policy Analysis Division faculty.... Allison McWilliams will develop a new leadership program for UGA Public Service and Outreach faculty and staff....
