AWARDS SEASON. Applications for the 2005 Georgia Excellence in Public Service Awards are being accepted now through April 15. The Institute and Georgia Trend magazine sponsor the awards to honor outstanding state and local public servants. For more details about the awards and the application process, go to Link.

LEGISLATIVE PREP WORK. Members of the Georgia General Assembly gathered in Athens in December for the 24th Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators. This nationally recognized program, which the Institute has coordinated since 1958, provides specially designed orientation sessions for new lawmakers as well as policy issue programs for all attendees. Newly elected legislators also attended a Day at the Capitol session in Atlanta in November. Link

PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS. A special Peach State Poll reports that while Georgians have a general degree of trust in the General Assembly as an institution of representative government, they are wary of the actual decision-making process that occurs. Link
Another poll finds that views on life in Georgia reflect the outcomes of the November 2004 elections. Link

NEW ON THE BLOCK. A record number of new county commissioners spent four days in Athens learning the ropes of their new jobs in a partnership between the Institute and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. Link

STATE TRAINING UPDATE. A new Management Development Program (MDP) for State Government is announced, with Part One classes set to begin in April 2005. In other state training news, the 12th graduation is held in the State Financial Management Primary Accounting Series. Link

COMMUNITY VISIONS. Rabun County officials and citizens recently worked together to formulate a plan for their community’s future. Link

INTERNATIONAL ANNIVERSARY. The International Center for Democratic Governance and the Beijing Administrative Institute celebrate five years of working together to train more effective local government administrators in Beijing. Link

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY OUTREACH. A new computer application is developed for officials who are responsible for predisaster planning. In another project, data about current state construction projects are being incorporated into the Georgia 2000 Information Systems Web site. Link

JUST PUBLISHED. A new fourth edition of the Handbook for Georgia Mayors and Councilmembers includes new chapters and expanded and revised discussions of all the topics relevant to today’s Georgia city governments. Link
