ISLAND TREASURES. Officials and owners representing Georgia's 14 barrier islands met for the first time in an organized setting to examine current issues affecting their precious resources.

STREET SCENE. The Institute and the American Public Works Association have fine-tuned the public works management certificate program to enhance its value to supervisors and managers from communities of all sizes.

CALENDAR CHECK. The Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators will hold its 25th anniversary meeting December 10-12, 2006 in Athens. Newly elected lawmakers will gather at the Capitol for a basic training session following the November elections.

HOW WAS YOUR DAY? Savannah and Bainbridge officials have contracted with the Vinson Institute for extensive studies of their job classification and compensation systems.

COUNTIES FRONT AND CENTER. The work of the National Center for the Study of Counties moves ahead with a variety of surveys and research activities.

PARCEL PROGRESS. Information Technology Outreach Services Division staff help local governments transform paper documents into digital format to enhance their usefulness in other local government operations.

LETTER FROM THE PAST. In connection with information on FDR in Georgia in the GeorgiaInfo section of the Institute's Web site, the Institute acquired one of the original copies of a letter written by two physical therapists at the Warm Springs facility written in the days immediately following the president's death there in 1945.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE. Organizations serving the large numbers of African refugees and immigrants in the Atlanta area are receiving assistance from the Institute's International Center for Democratic Goverance.

BUSY YEAR. The Vinson Institute provided a wide variety of outreach activities in 2005 to help provide better government and communities in Georgia.

LIBRARY CARD. It's back to the books for Georgia public library administrative personnel as plans are finalized for a new financial management training program provided by the Vinson Institute.

POLICY NOTE. The implications of the Alternate Minimum Tax (AMT) for property tax revenues and the state economy are examined in a new note in the Public Policy Research Series.

STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT ROCK. Middle and high school teachers gathered in Athens and Atlanta to learn how they can excite their students about the important part that government plays in their daily lives and about their role as citizens.

NEW PUBLICATIONS. A new edition of Compliance Auditing in Georgia Counties and Municipalities is available for the first time in print, CD, and online versions…. The new issue of State and Local Government Review includes articles exploring such topics as transportation financing and the local option sales tax, same-sex marriage ballot measures, and neighborhood revitalization programs.

OUTSTANDING OUTREACH. Steve Condrey was recently named the new editor-in-chief of Public Personnel Administration journal, as of January 2007.... Myra Byrd provided a special session at the 2006 annual conference of the Georgia Fiscal Management Council on the effective use of EXCEL shortcuts that accountants use most often.
